Most people think about sunlight as something to protect themselves from. But the latest science suggests the opposite problem is more common: most of us are not getting nearly enough of the right light, at the right time — and this has consequences that reach into every system in the body.
This is not a post about vitamin D supplements, though vitamin D matters. It is about something more fundamental: the fact that your body uses light as its primary signal for organising biology across every 24-hour cycle. Get that signal wrong — or miss it entirely — and the downstream effects are measurable, pervasive, and cumulative.

Deep in the hypothalamus sits a tiny structure called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). It is the master biological clock of the body, and it is exquisitely sensitive to light. Every morning, specialised cells in your retina — called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells — send a direct signal to the SCN that says: it is morning, begin the day's programme.
That programme is vast. The SCN coordinates hormone release, including melatonin for the night's sleep, immune activity, body temperature, metabolism, cell repair, and gene expression across every tissue in the body simultaneously. Approximately 43% of all protein-coding genes show circadian expression — meaning they are switched on and off at specific times of day, regulated by the light-dark cycle.
What this means in practice: missing morning light does not merely make you feel sluggish. It delays or blunts the timing of hormonal events, metabolic processes, and gene expression across nearly half the genome.

Most people are experiencing both simultaneously.
